Flower experiment

The children have been interested in colours. They have mixed primary colours to create secondary colours using coloured ice, finger paint, melted crayons and food colouring. They have also been interested in science experiments. So to expand on their interests we tried seeing how we could make carnations colourful and look what we learned...

  • the flowers are going to drink the water
  • flowers need water and sun to live
We put flowers in bottles of coloured water
We created new colours by mixing the food dye

  • the flowers drink from the root
  • it goes all the way up and up and up
Whats going to happen to the flowers?
When I look with this coloured glass the white flower is a different colour
  • the water is going down!
Look, I can see the flower pedals changing colours
  • some flowers are really bright
I drew the bottle and the water and what the flower looks like now
  • can I take one home to my mom
I'm going to do this at home!

Curriculum Connections

  • ask questions about and describe some natural occurrences, using their own observations and representations
  • make predictions and observations before and during investigations
  • select and use materials to carry out their own explorations
  • make predictions and observations throughout the design process
  • communicate and record results and findings after constructing things either individually or in groups
  • communicate their understanding of something by representing their ideas and feelings through visual arts

This is only a few of the expectations the children reached during this week of observation.
We have since ventured into rainbow colour order, shaving cream clouds to see the coloured rain drip through, and seeing what would happen if we put cheerios in purple water!
