Cookie baking-Update!

Some of our children have been baking alphabet cookies during their dramatic play. The use of baking sheets and magnets are a lot of fun, but wouldn't it be great if we could make real alphabet cookies?
Over the next few days, I will bring in some ingriedients to make cookie dough and alphabet cutters to make our own cookies.
The ingriedients are:
Butter, flour, vanilla, egg, sugar, baking powder.
Simple recipe, just so we can play in the ABC bakery.

In the pictures below I have stated what some of the FDK goals have been achieved by many of the children. These are examples of what many of the children are learning through our purposeful play.
These statements are directed to all of our children. There are so many things they are learning at one time.
FDK document goal that was achieved in making an ABC Bakery sign is, demonstrate an awareness that writing can convey ideas or messages

FDK document goal-Demonstrate persistence while engaged in activities that require the use of both large and small muscles

FDK document goal-Recognize people in their community and talk about what they do. (Bakers or cooks)

FDK document goal-express their thoughts and share experiences

FDK document goal-describe personal experiences, using vocabulary and details appropriate to the situation

FDK document goal-demonstrates knowledge of most letters of the alphabet in different contexts

Shaving cream or rain cloud

This messy fun was all about using your imagination. I brought out the materials and placed them on the table. I started to mix up water and food dye. I made a big pile of shaving cream in a jar full of water. I laid out eye droppers. The questions began to roll in. The inquiry was presenting itself. The discovery was well under way. So this experiment became theirs, child lead, not teacher directed. And some of the things they discovered...

I have to squeeze this to make it drink the colour and then squish it into the whip cream.
Its soap right,we cant ean't eat it.
Where is the colour going?
Look at the soap, its all colourful, like a rainbow.
I got soap in the little cup. It came off my eye dropper.
I cant reach, someone pass it to me.
The colours are mixing!
Ahhh its getting on the table, its falling off the top.
It looks like a cloud!
The colours are leaking into the water.
(ah ha moment) Its like rain!
The cloud is full, the colours are falling out.
The water in the jar looks like a storm.
Can we touch it now?

This is a great example of the children selecting material to carry out their own explorations.
These are kinds of inquiry that promote independent thinking, process not product and critical thinking for problem solving.

Surfing! -Update with video

Surfs Up!
Kids are ready for some warm weather, sun and sand. They built their own wave and surf boards to hang 10!

Curriculum Connections
  • demonstrate the ability to take turns in activities and discussions
  • demonstrate a willingness to try new experiences
  • demonstrate strategies for engaging in cooperative play in a variety of games and activities
  • demonstrate spatial awareness in activities that require the use of large muscles
  • begin to demonstrate control of large muscles with and without equipment
(this is only to name a few)
Some children used shorter boards and were able to slide down the wave!
Some children used longer boards, but discovered they couldn't slide as far since their board got beached pretty fast
They used a lot of balance to stay on the board and recognized to lean forward on their front leg to make the surf board move
They were very good about taking turns and watching their fellow surfers space so no one got pulled under the wave
Looks like a pro!
This friend decided to ski instead

My Favorite Quote

Flower experiment

The children have been interested in colours. They have mixed primary colours to create secondary colours using coloured ice, finger paint, melted crayons and food colouring. They have also been interested in science experiments. So to expand on their interests we tried seeing how we could make carnations colourful and look what we learned...

  • the flowers are going to drink the water
  • flowers need water and sun to live
We put flowers in bottles of coloured water
We created new colours by mixing the food dye

  • the flowers drink from the root
  • it goes all the way up and up and up
Whats going to happen to the flowers?
When I look with this coloured glass the white flower is a different colour
  • the water is going down!
Look, I can see the flower pedals changing colours
  • some flowers are really bright
I drew the bottle and the water and what the flower looks like now
  • can I take one home to my mom
I'm going to do this at home!

Curriculum Connections

  • ask questions about and describe some natural occurrences, using their own observations and representations
  • make predictions and observations before and during investigations
  • select and use materials to carry out their own explorations
  • make predictions and observations throughout the design process
  • communicate and record results and findings after constructing things either individually or in groups
  • communicate their understanding of something by representing their ideas and feelings through visual arts

This is only a few of the expectations the children reached during this week of observation.
We have since ventured into rainbow colour order, shaving cream clouds to see the coloured rain drip through, and seeing what would happen if we put cheerios in purple water!

I Fixed the FDK imovie Link....I think.

If you can not play this video, follow the instructions to ask the owner (me) for permission and I will email it to you.

During our FDK registration night we wanted to share with our new parents just what we do here in FDK.
We wanted them to have an inside look at what playbased learning is, what inquiry looks like and what emergent curriculum is all about.
Your beautiful children represent all of those things and so much more. We see them developing a love for learning and a love for school and a love for new relationships.
Enjoy!

(If this doesn't work, please leave me a message letting me know. I'm still learning. I'm not sure if any video or links will work on an iPad)
