Sensory or Science?

So this sensory experiment turned into much more. The children discovered the 2 blocks of coloured ice melted into a new colour.
First we had to figure out how to get them melting. " I hold them in my hands" " I rub them together"
"Look, it's making a new colour"

"I made teal" (G when she was holding the other bag)

"They are getting smaller" (N)
"It's going to make water. Coloured water" (J- he ran off before I could take his picture)
"There is a blue ice cube and a yellow ice cube and it made green" (A)

Rubbing the bag and shaking it up

"It's going to turn a colour but not the same colour because they are different colours"
"I wonder how I can make a Freezie?"

We recreated the colour changing process using paint. They made different shades.

The children love using their fingers in the paint on the slippery paper. This friend worked a long time on his colour experience.

The colour in the bag matches the colour on the paper. They had to experiment with amounts of blue and yellow to get the same shade.

Here is another colour we made. What colour are we making now? " I need more red, mine is to dark" " it's purple, but it looks black"

We took these creations to the "wonder" table. We will display them and see where their inquiry takes us next.
