Frozen Castle

I don't even know where to begin...this was an amazing dramatic play area that the children built themselves! Welcome to Arendelle!

The children created the icy blue walls, hung snow flakes that they cut, diamonds that shimmer, made a telescope to see people or snowmen in the forest, the towers with flags on top. Sometimes Arial joined in and swam in the blue water!

This was an amazing time for the girls and boys. They cut, and coloured. They sang and danced. They cooperated with each and took turns. They even fought off the evil villains, the mine craft warriors!

ðŸŽ¶ let it go, let it go...🎶 of course we sang!

On the other side of the room in the block center, there was another castle built. We wanted to get
from Princess Anna's castle to Princess Elsa's castle.

How do we get there? Let's follow the map! They used a road map, mapped out their route and began the long walk in the snow!
This has been a great adventure for the week...I wonder what we will create next week?

More documentation to come about our map adventures.

Sensory or Science?

So this sensory experiment turned into much more. The children discovered the 2 blocks of coloured ice melted into a new colour.
First we had to figure out how to get them melting. " I hold them in my hands" " I rub them together"
"Look, it's making a new colour"

"I made teal" (G when she was holding the other bag)

"They are getting smaller" (N)
"It's going to make water. Coloured water" (J- he ran off before I could take his picture)
"There is a blue ice cube and a yellow ice cube and it made green" (A)

Rubbing the bag and shaking it up

"It's going to turn a colour but not the same colour because they are different colours"
"I wonder how I can make a Freezie?"

We recreated the colour changing process using paint. They made different shades.

The children love using their fingers in the paint on the slippery paper. This friend worked a long time on his colour experience.

The colour in the bag matches the colour on the paper. They had to experiment with amounts of blue and yellow to get the same shade.

Here is another colour we made. What colour are we making now? " I need more red, mine is to dark" " it's purple, but it looks black"

We took these creations to the "wonder" table. We will display them and see where their inquiry takes us next.

Proud moments

Check back to this post as I will add more AHA! moments.

This door speaks for itself. She practised at home, and when she showed me what she could do...she earned her spot in the club!

This friend has made his own set of flash cards. He did to to 31 all by himself. He recognize every number. And on the second day, he made another set. Now he can make a pattern!

This friend has learned to read her level 1 book!

Building...height and length

Miss M- What can we make?   M- A building!
Miss M- who's stack of cups is bigger?    M- mine, I have 14!  (Just 1child so far)

3 children are now working together. They are stacking those cups so precariously! What could
happen?

Uh oh, they fell over. What can we do? (Miss M)
Make it again. (M) this time they are trying a different stacking method. (A new child has come to try)

Look what we made! A Fort!
They all did a great job of sharing, inviting new friends to join, and collaboration of ideas. They measured how many cups went across and how many cups high. Who it was taller than or shorter than.

How long
can we make this line of straws?
Do you think we could reach the wall? Yes! Look Mrs. Long, we're almost there.

I'll attach mine to yours.

How many straws long is our carpet area?
We counted 49!

Snow!

                               Snow much fun!
We are packing snow into containers to make snow castles!

Some friends wanted to squish their formation!

A friend brought her super cool snowball maker. She was very busy making snowballs for all the children. And I was very busy dodging them.

See the spray of snow? Guess where that snowball landed? On Mrs. Long! Oh the fun we had! Who could resist!

Another one aiming. Time to make a target on the wall. The children had throwing practise at the circle on the wall.

Gym

Taking a rest after running the court and shootin' baskets.

I think they are making plans how to win the game!

Streamers! We played fast music and slow music. We moved our streamers in different ways.

We tossed them in the air.

We ran like we had wings.

We moved them high and swished them low.
Some children tucked them in their back pockets like tails and some children tied them around their arms like butterflies.

We learned that the wind makes them flutter. They moved their bodies slowly and quickly to feel the rhythm and beat of the music.

"look at me!" What great balance she has.
"See how many I have?"

Looking for...

Hello parents,

Just a note to remind you that we are looking for each child to have a shoe box. We will be using them in a Valentine's day project. If you have extra, that would be helpful in case we run short.

We are also always in need of plastic grocery bags to send wet items home in, please feel free to send any in that you may not need.
And to go along with that, please be sure your child has extra clothing. We tend to have a lot of wet feet and wet pants from all the snow.

And one last item we are always looking to replenish is plastic cutlery. If you have any plastic spoons or forks you could donate, it would be appreciated.

Please feel free to leave positive comments on the blog. We would love to hear your feed back.

Enjoy the snow!!

Random interests

This is our organ model, she did a great job! After our exercise we looked to see which of our organs were working so hard.

After doing some ABC kickboxing, we felt our hearts beat, we noticed our breathing was heavy. We took out the stethoscopes and listened for our hearts.

Team work! Together these 2 friends built this huge puzzle and then cleaned it up together.

PALS

Now here is an exciting game to help learn the letter sounds and words that start with the sound. Hockey ABC!

The puck drops, what sound? "J" And how about a word that starts with the sound? "Jump"

The fans cheer! Shoot, shoot, shoot!

Choose your stick, and make your shot on net!

Any misconducts, it's the penalty box for you! Don't hit the ref with the puck.

If your slapshot doesn't make it, give me another word!

If you can't think of a word, yell to the crowd for help!

The kids love this exciting game, they are learning so much! Good job little hockey players!

The Mitten

Here is a link to a wonderful book we shared in the classroom which led to lots of inquiry.
The Mitten
We measured mittens with cubes, how long, how tall, how many fit inside.
We made the characters into puppets to retell the story.
We drew the character in a mitten.
We learned about symmetry by painting a mitten and folding the paper to make the match.
In these photos below, we put mittens on our hands and painted, a new sensory experience.

"I made teal. I got white, blue and yellow and mixed it up"

Teacher- "are your hands dirty inside the mitten?"  A- "yes"
Teacher- "how do you know?" A -"because my hand is wet!"

This friend was very quiet during her experiment of mixing colours. She was very focused and concentrating. You can see that she was making new colours by mixing a few different colours.

Finger vs. mitt...do they feel different?
"It feels funny, it feels different"

"I used every colour to make a rainbow"

"Mrs. Long! Look what we made! A big colour."

Looks like we have found a new interest, colour mixing. I wonder what we can do next?
