Literacy Hour

Literacy Hour

To help kick off the book fair Clifford came for a visit

We would like to thank all the parents who were able to come and volunteer as readers to the children

There is nothing better than a group of friends sharing a story adventure together

It's nice to share your favorite story and tell it in your own way. This helps create a love for new stories

As I tell our friends..."treat your books like your best friend, and you'll have them forever to enjoy"

Through reading we are promoting imagination, pre-reading skills, introduction to print, and a love for story telling

And another special guest came to visit. The children where so excited to see Elmo.

Inclement Weather

Parents

When we have inclement weather we ask that you bring your children to the front doors of the school and walk down to the classroom.
This will prevent anyone waiting at the side or back doors to be answered and eliminate any puddles and slip hazards in the classroom from wet boots.
Thanks for your cooperation

Donations

We are preparing to break out the Christmas festivies! Time for sparkles and glitter!
We are trying to restock our shelves for crafts and inquisitive creations.
If you have some odds and ends around the house you could spare we would appreciate it.
Some ideas of what we think would help your children explore their creative side:

Wrapping paper scraps
Gift boxes
Ribbon
Bells
Tape
Cards
Artificial pine bows
Bows
Pom poms
Cotton balls
Pipe cleaners
Glittery things
White board markers

Really, just about anything.

Also, thank you for sending in your beautiful junk, we had lots supplied to us. We will ask again when we run out.

Winter Wear

Its That Time...The Snow is here!

Cold cheeks, wet socks, soggy mitts.
Please help your child be prepared for the cold weather as we do go outside (temperature permitting) to enjoy the fresh air.
Here are a few helpful tips to set your child up for success during their outdoor inquiry.

  • label all articles of clothing
  • send extra mitts
  • wear a scarf (or the like) to protect those cheeks in the wind
  • snowpants
  • boots that are easy to slip on and off
  • extra socks and pants

Its a great idea to set aside some practise time to show the children how to dress in all their warm gear. It promotes independence and a moment of pride when they can get their boots on all by themselves.

Heres a little song we have been practising about getting dressed. Ask them to sing it to you.

Snow pants
boots
coat
hat
mitts
maybe even a scarf that fits
(repeat)

iPads

The children had an opportunity to master their skills of computer technology!

Some educational games provided them the opportunity to explore and engage curriculum in a fun and meaningful way:

  • letter sounds
  • number recognition
  • fine motor manipulation
  • social interaction

Centres

Small Group Inquiry

This is an opportunity once a day where our friends rotate through their groups to try new activities that the teachers have created to introduce curriculum enriched tasks. Everyday they try a new center and by Friday they have had the opportunity to enjoy all 5 centers. We have observed that the children really enjoy this inquiry time and look forward to their next adventure!

The children were given a box full of colourful shapes and 4 coloured rings.
They wondered...how can we sort these?
By colour?
By Shape?
By feel? (wood vs. plastic)
Does the colour on the shape have to match the colour of the ring?

As you can see, they came up with multiple attributes! Way to go!

Learning through Technology.
Educational games allowed for exploration of numbers, letters, and taking care of the ipads.
Friends helping friends when they had trouble...Nice job friends!

ABC Zoo matching.
Working as a team the children figured out what animal matched the corresponding letter card.
They then created a parade of animals in order.
Nice team work!

Salt writing.
Through texture, the children used their fingers to write out the letters in their names.
Children love to explore through hands on, this makes the "work" fun and meaningful to them.
Of course a little mess adds to the fun, but everyone chipped in to wipe the table and sweep the floor.
Thanks for helping the teachers!

Rhyme Time!
Rhyming words and picture clues, can you match them in pairs of two's?
The children have found similar words through rhyme, they look similar, they sound similar and they have a musical element that makes reading and writing fun!
Awesome work!

Remembrance Day

Today our children learned a little something about Remembrance Day.  We wanted to extend their curiosity of this important day and introduced literacy as a poem. Take a watch...

Visit from the Firefighters!

Our young fire fighters are learning all about the tools and gear that are kept on the fire trucks.

Seeing where the ladder and hoses are kept

"Can we go inside?"

"My feet don't touch"

Future team of firefighters

"It's high up!"

"Cheese!"

"Don't go back in the fire for your toys, ask them"

"You have to go down the stairs on your bottom"

"It's big, I can get down myself"

We practised yelling " help, I'm in here" so the fire fighters can hear us.

A few hugs and high fives with Sparky the fire dog!
