Getting involved in their play...

Our snow in our sensory bin started to melt. We collected some slush and put it in a jar. And what happened? "Look at the this dirty water! It's the snow. It melted!" 

Symmetry! We painted one mitten and folded the paper in half. "Look I made a match." "They are both the same."

Different methods of measurement...height, length, and capacity.

"This is our house"  "First we made a table, then we turned it over and added more pieces to make a house."

"We're drawing our house." "There are snakes in my attic."

"I'm drawing the sticks I see on the side of the road with ropes. Sometimes the birds sit on them" (hydro poles and lines) "the wires are attached to M's house"

Later these 2 boys stood in front of the class and presented their drawing. (Prewriting, infrencing, presenting, and recall and retell)

"Ruff ruff. The puppy is sitting in her bed."

"I'm the mom, I tell them to stay in their bed" She is the mom of all those puppies and it was her job to keep them safe.

Having a cozy quiet moment reading a book.

"We all have headaches and fevers."

A Few Favorite Things...

More chocolately mess, this center was a hit!

The children really benefited from some cutting instruction, to pull your chair in straight, tuck your elbows in, start from the bottom and thumb is up.

Printing words gave the children the feeling of accomplishment when they could sound out and read the words.

Holiday Visitors

The Big Guy came for a visit! Santa brought so much Christmas cheer and showed such a love for the children.

Olof! He joined in on stage during the Praise club performance then came for a visit in the kindergarten classroom. 

Centres

In the puppet theatre, the children took turns performing and being the audience. They had some great imaginative scenes to act out. 

This was a hit! Fake snow and shape molds. Easy to make at home. 2 boxes of cornstarch and a can of shaving cream. Keep it sealed in a container for hours of sensory play.

Working hard gluing and creating picture frame wreaths. Hope you enjoyed their beautiful faces!

How many marshmallows go in your cup of hot chocolate? Count them out!

It's the Ice Age!

What happens when you have a block of ice, dinosaurs inside and some tools to chisel?

We have palaeontologists! 

How can we melt the ice faster? Just like outside in the winter we sprinkle salt. 

But I can't see how the salt is working. Let's add some food colouring, and we will see just how deep the salt melts the ice.

The children loved this science experiment. We did it for 4 days.

Other connections they made: mixing colours, ice melts and makes puddles, dinosaurs where frozen in ice a long time ago, table salt you can eat but rock salt is for the sidewalk, ice is very cold.

Christmas Cookies!

This was an exciting day in FDK! Making Christmas cookies was the high light of the day. They couldn't wait to get in there and bake! Our classroom smelled so delicious!

We washed hands and jumped in.

We measured.

We kneaded.

We smelled and squished

We rolled

And we cut

And cut

   And cut some more

We even made extras for the principal and vice principals and custodian

Then we decorated with icing and sprinkles

Looks like we have the makings for a cooking show

I was so impressed how well the children could use the icing bags

And so careful with their precise placement of sprinkles

And waiting so patiently for their turn and waiting to eat them at home

I wonder what we will cook up next!
