This was a hit! Fake snow and shape molds. Easy to make at home. 2 boxes of cornstarch and a can of shaving cream. Keep it sealed in a container for hours of sensory play.

It's the Ice Age!
What happens when you have a block of ice, dinosaurs inside and some tools to chisel?
We have palaeontologists!
How can we melt the ice faster? Just like outside in the winter we sprinkle salt.
But I can't see how the salt is working. Let's add some food colouring, and we will see just how deep the salt melts the ice.
The children loved this science experiment. We did it for 4 days.
Other connections they made: mixing colours, ice melts and makes puddles, dinosaurs where frozen in ice a long time ago, table salt you can eat but rock salt is for the sidewalk, ice is very cold.
Christmas Cookies!
This was an exciting day in FDK! Making Christmas cookies was the high light of the day. They couldn't wait to get in there and bake! Our classroom smelled so delicious!
We measured.

We kneaded.
We smelled and squished
We rolled
And we cut
And cut
And cut some more
Then we decorated with icing and sprinkles
Looks like we have the makings for a cooking show
I was so impressed how well the children could use the icing bags
And so careful with their precise placement of sprinkles
And waiting so patiently for their turn and waiting to eat them at home
I wonder what we will cook up next!
Centres
In our centres, there is always an underlying reason why we chose the activity that we did. There is a connection to our curriculum. It may be social development. Math skills. Reading skills. Problem solving. Fine motor skills for writing and zipping and buttoning. Creativity. We like to also base our activities around the children's interests which makes learning fun and meaningful to the child.
We gave the children a tree and a supply of ornaments and material. They figured out how to decorate the tree, get the star on top and even make a tree skirt. Then they took it apart and tried a new way.
Counting Cheerios. What number card did you get? That's how many Cheerios you put on your stick. Some children even did many number cards and filled their sticks to the top and counted how many Cheerios they had all together.
Journal writing. The children love to write stories in their journal. They are learning to sound out words and print what sound they hear and some are copying words which is great eye hand coordination. They also have learned to draw a picture clue that matches their words, it is a prereading skill. Pictures help tell us what is happening in the story.
Breakfast with Santa
On the first day of Christmas my teacher gave to me, a band aid for my ouchie!
Wasn't that the most joyous moment? Your children singing so beautifully! They worked so hard to make it just right!
Mrs. Long and Mrs. McMillan want to wish all the children and their families a very Merry Christmas! Hope Santa is good to you. And have a safe and playful holiday!

I tried to get everybody, but with all the excitement I have missed some families. And not all the pictures are great quality. If you have some great photos of the party and would like to share them on our blog, please send them to my WECDSB email. kara_long@wecdsb.on.ca
